Breast mass excision or biopsy removes or samples a lump to obtain a diagnosis and guide treatment. The choice between the two depends on the clinical findings.

• A benign result and a result that needs further care are both explained
• Treatment is not guessed before the report is available

Follow-up is the conversation about what the tissue showed and what should happen next. That may be reassurance, further imaging or additional treatment.

• The report is discussed in language you can use
• Further tests are added if the result is incomplete
• Any next procedure is explained on its own, separate from the biopsy
