Examining a skin or soft-tissue lump

Skin and soft-tissue lesion evaluation examines a lump to decide whether removal or biopsy is needed. The visit is an assessment, and surgery follows only if it is indicated.

• How long the lump has been present and whether it has changed are discussed
• Size, site, tenderness and the tissue it sits in are examined
• Infection, a cyst, a fatty lump and other possibilities are considered

Removal or biopsy after the examination

Removal and biopsy answer different questions. The choice depends on the lesion, not on a routine operation for every lump.

• Observation is reasonable for some lumps that are clearly suitable for it
• Removal is discussed when the lump should come out
• Biopsy is discussed when a sample is needed before a wider plan

A plan based on the lesion

You leave knowing what the examination suggests and what the next step is. Pathology is explained if tissue will be sent.

• The reason for removal, biopsy or watching is stated clearly
• Local anaesthetic is mentioned only if a minor procedure is likely
• Follow-up is arranged for a result or a wound check when needed
