Why the hernia is assessed first
Hernia evaluation assesses inguinal, umbilical and other hernias before any repair is recommended. The visit decides whether surgery is indicated and, if so, which approach fits.
- The site, size and whether the hernia reduces are examined
- Pain, bowel symptoms and the effect on daily activity are discussed
- Previous repairs and your general health are taken into account
Inguinal, umbilical and other hernias
Groin, navel and other abdominal-wall hernias do not all need the same plan. The examination identifies which type you have.
- Inguinal hernias are assessed at the groin
- Umbilical and nearby hernias are assessed at the navel
- Less common abdominal-wall hernias are included when the examination suggests them
Deciding the approach if repair is needed
If repair is indicated, the approach is explained in outline, including whether mesh is likely to be used. If repair can wait, that is also explained.
