Removal of a benign-appearing lipoma

Lipoma removal is excision of a benign-appearing fatty lump for comfort or for cosmetic reasons. A lipoma should not be self-diagnosed, and pathology is used if there is doubt.

• The lump is examined rather than accepted on description alone
• Removal is reasonable when the lump is uncomfortable or you want it gone
• A fatty feel does not replace clinical judgement

Comfort or cosmetic reasons for excision

Some lipomas are removed because they press, catch or show under clothing. Others are removed because of their appearance, after the lump has been assessed.

• Discomfort, growth and site are discussed
• Cosmetic concern is a valid reason once the lump has been examined
• Observation remains an option when removal is not needed

Pathology if the diagnosis is in doubt

If the lump does not look straightforward, tissue is sent for pathology. That step avoids treating an uncertain mass as a simple lipoma.

• Doubt about the diagnosis leads to a laboratory check
• You are not asked to decide the diagnosis yourself
• Follow-up includes the wound and any result that was requested
