Body mass index (BMI)
Weight divided by height squared, used as a surgical safety threshold.
A rough measure of body size calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It is a blunt instrument — it cannot tell muscle from fat — but it is the standard threshold for elective body surgery because complication rates rise predictably above a BMI of about 32 to 35.
