Sapphire FUE vs Classic FUE
What changes when the blade changes
Sapphire FUE is classic FUE with one substitution: the steel blade that opens the recipient channels is replaced by one made from synthetic sapphire. Extraction, placement and aftercare are identical.
The sapphire blade is sharper and makes a V-shaped incision rather than a U-shaped one, so the channel matches the shape of the graft more closely.
| Factor | Sapphire FUE | Classic FUE |
|---|---|---|
| Blade material | Synthetic sapphire | Stainless steel |
| Channel shape | V-shaped, closer to the graft's own shape | U-shaped |
| Tissue trauma | Slightly less | Slightly more |
| Achievable density | 45 to 55 grafts per cm² | 40 to 50 grafts per cm² |
| Crusting and redness | Clears around a day or two earlier | Standard |
| Typical cost in Istanbul | €2,300 – €3,100 | €2,000 – €2,800 |
| Difference in final result | Marginal at 12 months | Marginal at 12 months |
Which one should you choose?
The honest answer is that at twelve months the two look very similar. Sapphire blades allow slightly tighter packing and the scalp settles a little faster, which is worth something if you are returning to work quickly or need high density in a small area.
What it is not is a different operation. If a clinic's main selling point is the blade rather than the surgeon, that tells you something about where their attention is.
Sapphire FUE Hair Transplant
Sapphire FUE opens recipient sites with sapphire blades, making finer incisions that can allow closer graft placement and quicker surface healing.
€2,300 – €3,100
FUE Hair Transplant
Follicular Unit Extraction lifts grafts one by one from the donor area, so density can be rebuilt without a linear scar.
€2,000 – €2,800
Frequently asked questions
- Is Sapphire FUE safer?
- No technique is meaningfully safer than the other. The sapphire blade causes slightly less tissue trauma, which can mean marginally faster healing, but complication rates for both are low and driven by technique rather than blade material.
- Why does it cost more?
- Sapphire blades are single-use and considerably more expensive than steel. The difference is largely consumables.
